Wateree Veterans Park to add Splash Pad in 2021

Updated: Aug 20, 2020

The Kershaw County Recreation Department announced plans today for the long anticipated Splash Pad project that has been discussed in Kershaw County for several years. Recreation Department Director Shane Duncan shared plans with the Wateree Wasp, and even hinted at some things to come beyond that splash pad.

"We're excited about the changes coming to the Wateree River Veterans Park. As we prepared our budget for 2021, we've seen a dramatic decrease in pee-wee football signups, in large part due to the requirements that all players wear face masks and maintain six foot social distancing during all aspects of play. As we sought alternative solutions for recreation, the splash pad just made sense", said Duncan.

The artist's rendering, seen below, shows how the splash pad will integrate into the surrounding wooded areas, while allowing appropriate social distancing during activities.

Duncan also hinted that more could be in store. "We're not quite ready to provide all the details, but one councilman, previously critical of the Riverfront Park, has had a change of heart and has agreed to make available $800K in ATAX funding to support the development of a water slide feature. We're excited about the possibility of adding the slide in mid-2022."

J. Wesley Snodgrass, Vice President of Government Contracts at Living Vine Water Features in Lynchburg, VA, has designed the splash pad and slide for Kershaw County. "Kershaw County will have a 'first in the country' slide that exits directly into deep water in the Wateree River. Our unique polycarbonate T-666 coating will protect the slide and associated components from floodwaters  and silt build-up, commonly found among riverfront parks. We believe that the investment will provide a solid season of use before requiring replacement."

Kershaw County is expected to vote on the expansion in Executive Session as part of an "undisclosed personnel matter" in an upcoming council meeting. Notice of the upcoming vote will be provided in the minutes following the meeting and posted on Council's MySpace page.
